I've actually written another article on ancient automata, robots, etc, which I need to post here sometime, because it expands very considerably the scope of this intriguing subject.Dr Karl Shukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06222845702628862829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788904336507460933.post-12591665478709507912012-01-11T00:32:17.532+00:002012-01-11T00:32:17.532+00:00Hmm...maybe I pondered too long about being "...Hmm...maybe I pondered too long about being "forged from earth" by Hephaistos and coming out of the earth like a statue as stated by Hesiod.
Anyhow the remaining automata include two girls (Kourai Khryseai), two dogs (Kuones Khryseos&Argyreos), 2 horses (Hippoi Kabeirikoi) and some singers (Keledones).
So even without Pandora, thats quiet a bunch. Would be interesting to see if the beliefs have sprung up all around the same time..Typhonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08087409371952413589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788904336507460933.post-24138162065257587722012-01-10T15:51:11.264+00:002012-01-10T15:51:11.264+00:00I've never read a version claiming that Pandor...I've never read a version claiming that Pandora was an automaton. On the contrary, she was famously the very first human woman, whose curiosity, inciting her to open her eponymous box, caused all the diseases and evils of the world to escape from its confines and inflict their ills upon humanity from that moment forth.Dr Karl Shukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06222845702628862829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788904336507460933.post-77080585732269649712012-01-10T12:20:34.015+00:002012-01-10T12:20:34.015+00:00As far as I remember there where a whole bunch of ...As far as I remember there where a whole bunch of automata in greek mythology, most of which made by Hephaistos. Depending on which version of the myth you read, the eagle who feasts on Prometheus liver was an an automaton with a reference to mechanics, Pandora too was an automaton and the Khalkotauroi of King Aeetes. Next to that the self-moving wagons/tablets of Hephaistos look nearly unspectacular...
So I guess automata must have troubled the Greek minds at that time..Typhonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08087409371952413589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788904336507460933.post-85696602767963581102011-08-24T21:34:09.140+01:002011-08-24T21:34:09.140+01:00Interesting, Andrew, I hadn't come upon this b...Interesting, Andrew, I hadn't come upon this before, so I'll check it out - sounds fascinating!Dr Karl Shukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06222845702628862829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788904336507460933.post-39525757735868141752011-08-24T21:23:45.784+01:002011-08-24T21:23:45.784+01:00Hi Dale, Glad you like it, and thanks very much fo...Hi Dale, Glad you like it, and thanks very much for the most interesting, informative comments!Dr Karl Shukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06222845702628862829noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4788904336507460933.post-50723882969181301072011-08-24T18:43:12.381+01:002011-08-24T18:43:12.381+01:00Wasn't there another version of the Talos stor...Wasn't there another version of the Talos story in which there were different races of metal-men in prehistory? I seem to recall an iron race, a stone race, a bronze race with Talos being the last bronze man. I think modern people were the gold race?Andrew D. We seem to have a good deal of overlap in that area, and I am a Harryhausen fan also.
The Greeks were very good at doing bronze statues of people and for a while, they would be doing this entirely by the lost-wax process. In Roman times, a lot of the bronze statues were copied by transcribing them into marble statues, evidently by doing a LOT of very precise measurements and copying exactly.

But back in the Heroic age of Greece, they would not have been making a lot of bronze statues that same wat-but they would have had bronze swords, shields and armour. Some of their armour was pretty extensive and granted protection over all points of the body. I imagine Talos was originally envisioned as an enormous walking suit of armour, just as having robots disguised as conventional suits of armour are a staple element in science fiction (occuring on Doctor Who many. many times that way)

Best Wishes, Dale D.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
